Liam Wright and Tate McDermott will continue their roles as Queensland Reds co-captains for the 2025 season, with head coach Les Kiss reaffirming his faith in the duo as he enters his second year at Ballymore.
The pair, who made their Super Rugby debuts together in 2018, bring a wealth of experience with a combined 175 caps for Queensland. This marks their fourth consecutive year sharing the captaincy.
Kiss praised Wright and McDermott’s leadership in a statement released on Thursday, noting their strong rapport with both the coaching staff and players. “There is a lot of respect, from coaches and fellow players, for Liam and Tate and the job they do as captains,” said Kiss. “These two embody the values of the club, and the Reds are in great hands heading into a big year.”
Wright, 27, emphasized the honor of leading his state team. “The privilege of captaining Queensland has never wavered,” he said. “I’m grateful for the support of the staff and players and am committed to serving the club. Tate and I have become more cohesive with each season, constantly refining how we work together.”
McDermott, 26, echoed his co-captain’s sentiments, adding, “It’s exciting to lead alongside Liam again. Having Les’s trust after a strong first year working together is a great feeling. He’s doing an outstanding job guiding the club.”
The Reds are gearing up for their Super Rugby Pacific opener against Moana Pasifika at Suncorp Stadium on February 21. Before that, they’ll head to the UK for a two-game tour, facing Bristol on January 31 and Ulster on February 7.
