Match Report Round 3

Easts 22 defeated Bond University 20 at Bond University IT was wet, wild and willing on the water-logged Gold Coast on Saturday afternoon. But cool, calm and collected co-captain Eli Pilz rose above the calamity to kick the Stara Easts Tigers to a gutsy 22-20 victory over Bond University. The Tigers remain undefeated in their 2025 StoreLocal Hospital Cup title tilt with their third-straight victory that was built on toughness and tenacity after torrential weather lashed Bond’s home ground to the point that the 3.05pm kick-off was pushed back. Pilz’s decisive penalty goal from 25 metres out and to the left of the...

Tigers Match Report – Round 2

AMERICAN novelist James Lane Allen never quite made it to Bottomley Park. However, the 19th century writer’s famous quote – “adversity does not build character, it reveals it” – rang loud and true around Tigerland in Round 2 of the StoreLocal Hospital Cup. It was gritty – not pretty - but the character-filled 31-28 comeback victory over Wests was a thing of beauty for the Stara Easts Tigers who remain undefeated in 2025. The visiting Bulldogs led 21-7 after 28 minutes and then held a 28-19 buffer in the second half after a host of momentum swings delivered a cracking high-quality...

The Re-Opening of David Wilson Field…The Heart of Tigerland

The upgraded David Wilson Field is back in action on Saturday for the rare return of Australia A flanker Brad Wilkin to the Easts jersey. The improvements in drainage under a full grass cover will make the main field at Bottomley Park the best July club surface in Brisbane. Playing on the main field again has been much anticipated and a headline match against premiers Wests guarantees an excellent turnout for the Paul Mooney Cup clash.  The diehard support from the can bar corner will also be corralled a little differently. The intimidating rumble that envelops rival teams in that tryline...

A Premiership Weekend to end 2022 on a high

Greg Riley’s first premiership for Easts was 20 years in the making and it tasted just as satisfying as he thought it would. [caption id="attachment_14026" align="alignright" width="225"] Easts' grand final fans came in all ages like Kohen, 17 months[/caption] Of all the victory stories and celebrations from grand final weekend, no one had toiled longer to deserve it than the 40-year-old lock from third grade. The Tigers had plenty to celebrate with premierships in thirds, fourths and fifths from Saturday’s action at Wests Rugby Club and a shared Colts 1 premiership from the club season finale at Suncorp Stadium on...

A History of Success

In 1947 the Queensland Rugby Union (QRU) started an Old Boys Competition for past students of G.P.S. schools. One of the teams was the Brisbane State High School Old Boys. This team became known as Colts in 1948 and finally in 1949, at the suggestion of the QRU, the club assumed the name Eastern Districts. Today the club is known as Easts Rugby Union Inc.

The Premiership Success

Since then the Tigers have won the Hospital Cup on five occasions, in 1997, 1999, 2008, 2013 and 2020. In both 1984 and 1999 Easts won the Welsby Cup and Horsley Cup, while they have also claimed the Doughty Shield on six occasions (1987, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2009 and 2020).

Following their 2008 Premiership success, Easts went on to become Australian Club Champions by defeating Sydney University. They replicated this feat in 2021 with a victory over Gordon Rugby Club to claim the club’s second Australian Club Championship Title.

Without a doubt 2020 was the most successful year in the nearly 75 year history of the club.

Securing 6 Premierships in 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th, Premier Women and Colts 4, the club also won the Doughty Shield for a 6th time.

In their history 13 players have received Premier Rugby player of the year honours, our most recent being Ben Mowen in 2020.

A total of 29 players that have played for the Tigers have also gone on to wear the Green and Gold jersey for either the Wallabies, Australian 7s, Australian U20s, Australian U18s or the Wallaroos teams.

A new era in Women’s Rugby

Arguably, our most successful team is our Premier Women’s Rugby side, accumulating 8 premiership wins in recent years.

With an evolving program Easts is proud to have been the training ground for many of Australia’s loved international players.

We welcome enquiries to play throughout the year so it’s never too late to become a Women’s Rugby Player!
