Reds Academy halfback Willem Johnstone is within sight of his first grade debut at Brothers after being picked on the bench for Saturday’s round in the StoreLocal Hospital Cup.
Johnstone has been proving himself in third and second grades with the Brethren since a surprise late pre-season switch from Souths. A longstanding weekend away for top-grade regular Isaac Tarabay has created the opening.
The unbeaten Brethren are making the trip to St Lucia to face the University of Queensland in the most traditional clash on the calendar.
There will be a fine battle at halfback. Uni halfback Liam Prendergast has the strong defensive game to keep tabs on quicksilver Brothers starter Will Cartwright, who scored another of his long-range specials against Easts in Round Two.
“We’re extra wary of Uni. They haven’t had the start to the season they wanted and will be out to get us,” Brothers coach Ben McCormack warned.
At Chipsy Wood Oval, improvers Souths host Easts, a club desperate to get out of the cellar by posting their first win of 2024.
The Magpies will again have Reds flyhalf Harry McLaughlin-Phillips running the show from No.10.
Sunnybank will host GPS while Norths welcome Bond University to Hugh Courtney Field.
