Digby Ioane. You’ll recognise the name and soon enough you’ll see the talent when the best Under-14 players in Queensland gather for the Buildcorp Emerging Reds Cup at Ballymore.
Ioane is just 14 and shares the same name as his uncle, Digby Ioane, who played 35 Tests for the Wallabies and was a try-scoring star in the Queensland Reds’ 2011 Super Rugby final triumph.
Young Ioane, a Year Eight student, is starting his own rugby journey in the centres at Brisbane State High School. He will play in the Brisbane White team at the ERC which kicks off at Ballymore on September 16.
One hundred rugby-loving kids, representing rugby centres from the Gold Coast to Cairns, feature in the four ERC teams named today.
Brisbane White, the Brisbane Junior Rugby Union, Queensland Country and South-East Queensland Barbarians will gather at Ballymore for three days of matches at Ballymore next month.
The Queensland Country side will be skippered by flanker Noah Mariner, now playing for Churchie but a product of the Coomera Crushers from the Gold Coast.
Hooker Cayleb Beath already represents the desire in the ranks. When he missed out on the Queensland Country squad, the forward from Yeppoon’s Cap Coast Crocs flew down to last weekend’s trials in Brisbane to earn a spot in the South-East Queensland Barbarians squad.
